Gynecomastia is a malformation caused by increased tissue in the male breast. This condition can occur for various reasons, too much prolactin in the blood, when due to a disease the liver cannot metabolize estrogen production, sometimes the excessive use of anabolic steroids in men who exercise, or as a side effect from medication. It affects 20% of men and can occur in one or both breasts.

Gynecomastia surgery can be perfomed using several techniques, individually or combined, depending on the amount of breast tissue and age of the patient. In a young patient with low fat accumulation, an incision is made in the lower part of the areola to remove the fat through liposuction. The scar is imperceptible.

When breast size increases, liposuction is combined with the removal of breast tissue and mammary glands. The incision is also made in the lower part of the areola and all procedures are performed through it; as previously mentioned, scarring is minimal.
Gynecomastia surgery lasts between one and two hours, and can be performed under local or general anaesthesia on an outpatient basis.
After undergoing gynecomastia surgery the patient must remain at home for five days. During this period and for a month the patient must use a compression garment. Swelling and discomfort is likely and the patient may need to have fluid drained from the wound. We recommend avoiding strong movements, and sleeping on your back during the first few days.
